Images and other third-party material

The Creative Commons licence above does not apply to images. Unless an image is specifically identified as being in the public domain, it remains the copyright of a third party, such as a museum, archive, library or individual. Many images on this website have been specifically licensed for our use or are reproduced with the kind permission of our partner organisations.

Each image is credited to its rights holder where known. If you would like to reuse an image, whether in your own teaching materials, publications or online, you must contact the rights holder directly to request permission. We are not able to grant permission on their behalf. Please do not assume that an image can be reused because it appears on this website or in one of our downloadable resources.

The same applies to any other third-party material, such as audio, video, logos and extracts from published works, unless it is clearly marked otherwise.

Text written by third parties

Some content on this website is written by people outside the project team, including community researchers and guest contributors. Such contributors retain the copyright in their work, and different terms of reuse may apply. Where this is the case, the licence or any restrictions will be stated at the foot of the article. If no licence is stated, please contact us before reusing the text.

Video and audio content

This website also contains video and audio resources produced by the project, as well as third party video and audio clips. Third party content will be explicitly identified as such and has been specifically licensed for use on this website. As such it should not be republished without the express consent of the third party rights holder.

Video or audio content produced by the project is, like text written by the project team, able to be licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0 conditions.

Downloadable resources

Our classroom resources are made up of text, images and other materials. The CC BY-NC licence applies only to text. The licence and credits for any images or third-party material are given in each resource.

Using material in the classroom

UK copyright law allows teachers to use some copyright material in teaching without asking permission. For example, copyright works may be used in schools in any medium to illustrate a point, provided the use is non-commercial, fair and accompanied by a sufficient acknowledgement. Works may also be shown or played to pupils and teachers in an educational setting for educational purposes. The Department for Education also buys copyright licences, including from the Copyright Licensing Agency, that cover state-funded primary and secondary schools in England for most of their copyright needs.

These permissions have limits. In particular, the licences and exceptions are designed for use within the school. They do not necessarily allow you to publish or share images publicly, for example on a school website or on social media platforms. Independent schools and sixth-form colleges are not covered by the DfE licences, and arrangements in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland may differ. If you want to reuse a third party copyright image outside these permissions, please contact the rights holder directly, as described above.

For details, see the GOV.UK guidance on exceptions to copyright for teaching and on copyright licences for state schools in England. Please check with your school’s leadership team if you are unsure what your school’s licences cover.
